"Titanic" by James Cameron: a review

Titanic was a huge film in many ways. First, was the budget of two hundred million. Secondly, it became the highest grossing movie of all time, coming in at $1.8 billion worldwide. Thirdly, it was critically acclaimed, winning eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Lastly, it provided a memorable line.

Director, producer, writer, James Cameron, spent much time and money on making the film as authentic as possible relating to the ship and the sinking. Actual footage is shown from recovery efforts and detailed models recreate the sinking.

A love storyline with quite a bit of intrigue is developed to hold the long film (It runs over 3 hours.) together. The story is told from Rose’s (Gloria Stuart) perspective at age 101. Rose tells the story of how she (played by Kate Winslet) was on the ship with her fiancé, Cal Hockley (Billy Zane). Rather than succumb to the pressure to marry him, she attempts suicide, but is saved by Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).

At one particularly happy moment, Jack stands on the bow of the ship, stretches out his arms and yells, "I am king of the world". So many viewers and critics find it "cheesy", but the truth is that most of us have, hopefully, had a moment when we felt like this!

Rose and Jack develop a love for each other, and Cal shows himself to be a truly unscrupulous man. Jack and Rose end up in the icy water, where Jack freezes to death. A necklace, which was used to frame Jack as a thief, ends up being kept by Rose until she lets go of it at the end of the movie. So if you are ready for an evening with dinner and a movie, order a pizza and watch Titanic!
