Plot – Butch Haynes is a hardened criminal whose record goes back to his childhood. It is 1963 and Haynes has just escaped from Hunstsville prison in Texas, where he was serving 40 years for armed robbery. In the escape he takes seven-year-old Phillip Perry hostage. Ranger Red Garnett is in charge of Haynes' capture and is assisted by a whole team consisting of, among others, the criminologist Sally Gerber. The governor of Texas has provided Garnett with a special equipped caravan to be used as a mobile coordination center during the chase. Haynes's case has arisen great interest among the people and this involves large pressures and political interference. There are only two weeks left, in fact, to the official visit of President John F. Kennedy to Dallas.
