Plot – Eastern Europe, 1835. The gendarme Costandin and his son Ionita travel through the barren landscape in the middle of Wallachia in search of the gypsy servant Carfin, who has fled and is suspected of having had an affair with the wife of his aristocratic master. Costandin conducts his life according to a rigid code of rules and beliefs, while Ionita has a more contemplative view of the world. Along the way, the two men meet people of different nationalities and religious beliefs: Turks, Russians, Christians, Jews, Romanians and Hungarians; and each carries prejudices against the others which have been passed down for generations. Once the servant Carfin is found, everything seems back to normal, but the adventure is far from over and the truth will be quite different from what it seemed.
