Plot – Pete Sandrich, a skillful and reckless airplane pilot assigned to forests fires' extinguishing, doesn't want to stop to fly as Dorinda Durston, his girlfriend, suggests him. The woman is apprehensive and her fears are justified when, during a very risky mission to save his friend Al Yachey, Pete dies. After meeting the ethereal Hap in heaven, Pete agrees to transmit, as a "guardian angel", his experience to Ted Baker, an aspiring pilot fascinated by Dorinda but frequently rejected by her, because the woman is still emotionally bounded to her beloved Pete. Sandrich now has a mission, that is not only to train Ted to his image and similarity, but to reassure Dorinda about the new lover, freeing her heart from any past regrets. Completed the "mission", Pete is admitted to heaven.

- Al Yackey: Oh there's only ever been two kinds: There's lash fires, which are all flame, burn themselves out and leave nothing. Then there's the long burning. That is nature's burn. Even when you think it's out, the forest floor is warm to the touch. That's the kind you and Dorinda got.
- Pete...” (continue)(continue reading)“You magnificent pagan god!”
“I know now, that the love we hold back is the only pain that follows us here.”
“- Al Yackey: I miss him too! I miss him too. I miss him every day. I loved him like I've never loved a guy. And I don't love guys. You don't have an excuse, you quit. You quit, you gave up. He never quit on anything until it killed him, and that was his way, and there's much worse ways, and boy you sure found one.
- Dorinda Durston: I can't live...” (continue)(continue reading)“It's not the dress... it's the way you see me.”
“He's too beautiful. He's too much twisted steel and sex appeal. I can't be with a guy that looks like I won him in a raffle.”
“The beer's warm, the dance hall's a Quonset, there's B-26s outside, hotshot pilots inside, an airstrip in the woods... it's England, man!”
“- Al Yackey: The hell with it. What this place reminds me of is the war in Europe.
- Pete Sandich: This is deep.”“I don't know what you think you're doing, but turn this plane around. Dorinda, you never would listen to me and you always did just fine, but this isn't the same. This is Ted's mission, and you're not good enough. You're not good enough, and you won't make it! Is that what you want? That's not my girl!”
“There's something fishy going on here, and I don't think it's the chicken.”
“I love you, Pete... but I'm not enjoying it.”
“- Al Yackey: He said this was your birthday.
- Dorinda Durston: He remembered it wrong.”
