Plot – In the summer of 1839 during a stormy night in the sea offshore Cuba, 53 African slaves on the Spanish ship "Amistad" break free. Led by Cinque they take the vessel's leadership and head to Africa, but they aren't experienced sailors, so they rely on two surviving crew members, who cheat on them. After two months, an American ship catches them offshore Connecticut and the Africans are imprisoned and taken to trial for the murder of the Spanish crew. The case begins quietly and their defense is entrusted to Roger Baldwin, a young lawyer. Gradually the case runs into slavery's issue and becomes the symbol of a divided nation.
