Plot – Paul Biegler has to defend Lieutenant Manion, who has killed Barney Quill after he insulted his wife Laura. Biegler hesitates at first, then he accepts due to his partner Parnell's insistences. The trial is difficult as the accused has already confessed and there aren't witnesses on his behalf. The prosecutor, a political opponent of Biegler, is assisted by another famous lawyer. In addition, the victim was a man with many important friends. Biegler studies the case in all its details but he concludes sometimes jealousy leads to excessive reactions.
