Plot – In New York, Melvin Udall is a writer of sentimental novels who suffers from OCD. He has fun insulting and hurting other people, who react harshly. A talented painter called Simon lives in front of his flat. He is the hit of the actual New York’s artistic scene, he’s openly gay and he’s victim of the neighbor’s meanness.
Every day Melvin has breakfast in a restaurant where Carol is the only waitress who listens to his jokes. She is a single mother with a son who suffers from chronic asthma. One day, Simon invites a young model for a portrait, but the guy calls some friends that destroy the house, steal everything and brutally beat the painter up. While he’s at the hospital, Melvin agrees to take care of Verdell, Simon’s dog: strangely, the two become friends. Then Melvin finds out about Carol’s son illness: he sends a doctor to the woman, who prescribes a strict and highly effective therapy. Carol is embarrassed, so she tells Melvin that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. Is she truly sure? Behind that cynical mask hides a sensitive man who’s worthy to love her.
