One evening, Bingo is used to substitute a purebred dog that was supposed to perform for the show, but that got injured during training. The act calls for the dog to jump through a hoop of fire, but Bingo has had no training. Unnecessarily stirred up and fondled by the two managers, the dog hesitates, turns away afraid and flees in the direction of the nearby river. The next day a group of boys on bicycles meet there to do acrobatics. From the end of an unfinished wooden bridge that crosses the river, the boys jump recklessly to the opposite bank, mocking Chuckie Devlin, the youngest of the gang, who stops at the obstacle, remains on the bridge and dares not jump. However, as soon as his friends have left and he is no longer intimidated by their mockery, Chuckie tries the jump and falls into the river, getting knocked unconscious and in danger of drowning, just as Bingo is arriving. Among plaintive yelping and peremptory barking at the boy to shake him up, Bingo grips Chuckie by a foot with its teeth and manages to drag him ashore. Chuckie is safe and the two become inseparable friends, but in secret, because both Hal and Natalie, the boy's parents who suffer from "sports fanaticism", cannot stand dogs. Thus begin Bingo's adventures to remain near its friend or to reach him again when bad luck has separated them. The dog's attachment to Chuckie is total and irreversible. Bingo overcomes any obstacle and any risk to remain near him, even facing its greatest fear and desperately jumping through the flames of a fire to save a friend in danger.
