Plot – Ten-year-old Harriet and her older sister Gwen live with their mother in the motel that was assigned to her after the divorce. One day Lia arrives with her son Ricky: she is a mature woman and he is a retarded adult. Gwen's mother, an alcoholic, has a car accident and dies, so Gwen goes to school to break the news to her sister, who cries for a long time. Ricky and Harriet begin to play together, but one morning Ricky runs away and Harriet follows him. He is taken to hospital and to see him she says she is his wife. When he comes out, Harriet takes Ricky to her classroom, then the two hug at home. Gwen sees them, screams, calls the police and the boy is arrested. After the situation has been clarified, Lia and Ricky leave the motel. At first he comes back, then goes away permanently. At night Harriett asks Gwen to tell a story before going to sleep.
