Plot – Selena St. George, a successful journalist from New York, has to return to Maine to meet up with her mother Dolores Clairborne, who is suspected of the murder of Vera Donovan, the old and rich lady that Dolores took care of. Everything seems against her: the situation, the postman who saw her near the dead woman with a rolling pin, and the testament, which is relevant for Detective John Mackey, who has been trying to incriminate Dolores for the husband’s death for over 20 years. The relationship between the harsh daughter and the caring mother isn’t easy. The memories come to light and Dolores remembers all the sacrifices and the humiliations she went through while she was working for Vera to make her daughter study.

Why... one is probably dying right now while you're sitting here weeping. They die... and leave their wives their money. I should know, shouldn't I?
