Plot – At the end of the 19th century in Ireland, tenant farmers rebel against the expensive rents and evictions imposed by rich owners like Daniel Christie, who live far away in their mansions and have never seen the lands that they own. During a riot, old Donelly is mortally wounded but, before dying, he encourages his youngest son Joseph to conquer his own land. Christie's men, led by the ambitious young Stephen, who aspires to marry Christie's beautiful daughter, burns the poor Donelly's house during the funeral of the old man. Fellow villagers spur Joseph to kill Daniel Christie for revenge and they give him a rifle. However, Joseph does not know how to shoot and when he reaches Christie's house he is wounded and captured. Nonetheless, he manages to gain the respect of both the girl and her father, although she pretends to despise him. As the heiress will not accept the conventional future that her parents have prepared for her, she flees with Joseph to America.
