Plot – Macbeth, Baron of Glamis, brave and loyal general in the army of King Duncan of Scotland, has killed the traitor MacDonald, head of the rebel forces, in a bloody battle. Walking the battlefield with his companion Banquo, Macbeth meets three women who predict that he will become Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland while Banquo will be the first in a line of kings. Both men are shaken by the prophecies received from the three women, although at the moment they do not pay excessive attention to them. Angus and Ross, two Scottish nobles, reach the battlefield to convey to Macbeth the King's thanks for his courage in battle and to give him the title of Thane of Cawdor: the man who held the title before had been killed for treason against the crown. When Macbeth goes to pay tribute to King Duncan, the King tells him that he has made arrangements to visit his home in Inverness and celebrate the victory. In Inverness, Lady Macbeth receives a letter from her husband who informs her of the prophecy. Lady Macbeth has not seen her husband for years because of the war and is grieving the loss of their only child. An idea makes its way into her mind: she devises a plan to kill King Duncan, and thus to ensure the throne for her husband.
