Plot – Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey is known as a Royal Navy member, while Stephen Maturin is the ship's doctor. Their ship, the 'Surprise', is suddenly attacked by a very powerful enemy and gets badly damaged, while half of the crew gets injured. Aubrey is torn between duty and friendship: the captain has to decide if embarking his men on a risky pursuit between two oceans to intercept and capture Surprise's enemies. Such a mission could improve his reputation but could endanger both him and his men.
