He's a brilliant literature professor indeed, while her mother Kate is an housewife. When she's diagnosed with cancer, Ellen would like to go back to New York, but then she decides to stay close to her mother. At Christmas, Kate's conditions worsen and after the New Year's eve she asks her daughter to help her to die. Ellen refuses so Kate asks the same thing to her husband. The woman dies but the girl has to explain the events to a lawyer, who states Kate died due to an excess of morphine. Father and daughter go together to the woman's grave and they learn Kate must have ingested the drug by herself.
