Plot – Rusty Sabich is a deputy chief prosecutor appointed to investigate Caroline Polhemus's murder, his charming colleague and his former lover. During the investigation Raymond Horgan, Rusty's superior, believes the prosecutor is guilty. Barbara, Rusty's wife, is very upset and Alejandro Stern, Rusty's defense attorney, doubts the case too. During the trial, Rusty's accuser is cynical Nico Della Guardia, Horgan's contributor, but Stern manages to make Sabich to be acquitted. When he returns home, in the basement he discovers a bloodstained ax: Barbara is the real murderess and killed Caroline because she was jealous.
