Plot – In Chicago, the Archbishop Rushman is killed in his house. He was a close friend of John Shaughnessy, chief of the district attorney. John presides over the bishop’s charity foundation in a rich diocese full of lands, that John and other businessmen are interested in acquiring. The police immediately chases Aaron Stampler, a young, shy and stutterer parishioner. Shaughnessy entrusts the case to his assistant Janet Venable, ex-lover of the lawyer Martin Vail, who has already defended Aaron. Vail is convinced that Aaron suffers from mental illness, because he is apathetic and moaner, but also furious and violent.
