“The Cotton Club” quotes
(1984)Plot – In the late 1920s, the Cotton Club is the most famous club in New York. Black singers and dancers perform but only white people are allowed in. When a mafia boss - Schultz the Dutchman - is attacked in the club, the young white cornet player Dixie saves his life. The Dutchman pays Dixie back by making sure he gets hired by the Cotton Club, which is managed by mafia boss Owney Madden, and instructs him to escort his mistress Vera Cicero. Dixie and Vera slowly fall in love, but the Dutchman's shadow looms. All sorts of mobsters meet at the Cotton, but Dixie no longer accepts the role he has been given and, thanks to the intervention of the club owner, goes to Hollywood where he quickly becomes a movie star. Vera refuses to run away with him, even if she loves him, because she is dominated and intimidated by the Dutchman's violence, who on the other hand has opened a luxury bar with her name. However, the Dutchman's career is also over. A new generation of mobsters is emerging: the new rising star is Lucky Luciano, who aspires to be the lord of the world of vice and whose killers take out the Dutchman and his gang. The boss who ran the Cotton Club ducks out, preferring to spend a few months in prison for tax crimes rather than to face the deadly risks looming over the city, while Vera and Dixie leave for Hollywood to build a new life.
