Plot – The fame of Grandier, a corrupt and libertine friar in the village of Loudun, arouses the curiosity of the Mother Superior, who wants him to come and live in her convent and become a spiritual guide. Grandier refuses, enraging the abbess and plunging the whole convent into chaos. Some of the friar's opponents use the strange events occurring in the convent to accuse Grandier of being responsible of satanic practices. Grandier will be burnt alive.
