Plot – Grace MacLean, a 14-year-old girl, has been left with deep physical and psychological wounds after an accident in which her best friend lost her life while they were riding their horses. Her horse Pilgrim is also seriously injured and the vet recommends putting it down. Grace's mother Annie, editor of a major magazine in New York, understands that a strong bond unites the daughter and the horse and, overcoming her husband Robert's resistance, she decides that this relationship should be recovered. Upon learning where Tom Booker, considered to be the greatest expert on horses, lives, she leaves for Montana, taking her daughter and the horse with her. Tom begins a painstaking job, designed to recover all that the accident had destroyed. It is a task that proves to be more difficult than expected and their stay is prolonged, causing Annie to be replaced at work. Meanwhile, mutual admiration and attraction grows between Tom and Annie. When it's time for the final test, Robert arrives. The sacrifices they made give the hoped for prize: Grace climbs back on a more docile Pilgrim. Robert, who senses the relationship that has grown between Annie and Tom, sets off with their daughter leaving his wife the freedom to decide. Annie, who has to drive the van with Pilgrim's trailer, understands that her place is with her husband and daughter and leaves Montana to return to New York.
