“You have a right to have an ideal. Oh, I guess we all have one.”
“I could imagine a life with you being a series of ups and downs, lights and shadows, some irritation, but very much happiness.”
“Don't you think it a little bit dangerous? I don't mean for us, I mean for your heart. They're apt to be slightly narrow-minded, the righteous people.”
“A girl of sixteen's practically an idiot anyway, so I can't very well blame you for something that was practically done by somebody else.”
“I'm terribly in love, and you seem to be too, so one of us has to think and try and keep things clear. And maybe I can do that better than you can. They say a moonlit deck is a woman's business office.”
“What I'm trying to say is - only I'm not a poet, I'm an ophiologist - I've always loved you. I've never loved anyone but you. I know that sounds dull as a drugstore novel, and what I see inside I'll never be able to cast into words, but that's what I mean. I wish we were married and on our honeymoon now.”
“- Charles: Are you an adventuress?
- Jean: Of course I am. All women are. They have to be. If you waited for a man to propose to you from natural causes, you'd die of old maidenhood.”
