Plot – In 1860, Garibaldi lands in Sicily and Prince Fabrizio Salina witnesses all the consequences of this event. Despite the imminent war, the Prince and his family move to their country residence in Donnafugata, where the beloved nephew Tancredi falls in love with Angelica, daughter of the mayor and member of the new middle class. Tacredi takes part to Garibaldi's campaign and distinguishes himself during the battle of Palermo. The marriage between Angelica and Tancredi, symbol of the transition of power from the aristocratic landowners to the middle class, is officiated during a long ball that takes place in the sumptuous residence.
