Plot – Ashoke and Ashima leave Calcutta just after the celebration of their arranged marriage to move to New York. In the large crowded metropolis they both have to start a new life, while coming to terms with the fact of being virtually strangers to each other. Their married life has a breakthrough with the birth of a son who Ashoke decides to call Gogol, in honor of the Russian novelist. This important and high-sounding name has ties to a secret past and contains the hope of a different and better future. However, Gogol's life is not simple. First-generation American, from an early age he must learn to mediate between his roots and modernity in order to find his own identity. While Gogol begins a personal war with his world, rejecting his given name, dating a rich American girl and enrolling at Yale University, his parents are entrenched in Bengali traditions. The paths of parents and son, however, are meant to cross, until Gogol finally opens his eyes and understands.
