Garp marries Helen Holm and they have two children. By the time he publishes his first novel "Magic Gloves", Jennie has turned her beautiful house by the sea into an only women community. There the girls have cut their tongues to support Ellen James, a girl who has mutilated herself because of a rape. Jennie gives herself to the politics, meanwhile Garp writes and raises his children and Helen becomes a teacher and falls in love with a young student. One evening, Garp is returning home with the kids and crashes with his car against the two lovers' one and little Walt dies.
