Plot – In Chicago Detective V.I. Warshawski - known as Vic - is a forty-year-old woman skilled in martial arts with masculine language and manners who has fallen in love at first sight with the former hockey player, 'Boom Boom' Grafalk. She sees him arrive breathless at her house together with his thirteen-year-old daughter Kat. The man asks Vic to look after her and shortly after he dies tragically on board of a tugboat. Vic is suspicious and decides to cast light on the fact, also moved by Kat's psychological pressure as she doesn't want to return to her mother Paige. Vic starts investigating.
