Plot – Unorthodox is a German-American drama television miniseries inspired by Deborah Feldman's 2012 autobiography, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. The show follows Esther Shapiro, a 19-year-old girl who was brought up in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn's Williamsburg district and now strikes out for Berlin where her estranged mother lives, leaving behind an arranged marriage and tight-knit faith community to pursue her goal of discovering her path. Her husband, who learns that she is pregnant, travels to Berlin with his cousin, by order of their rabbi, to try to find her.
